When I first arrive, the brightly colored umbrellas and the sun reflecting off the green water instantly blind me until my eyes can adjust. I can feel my leg muscles working while we walk on the soft sand to where we will set up our stuff. While we walk, I look out at the horizon and it seems like it just keeps going as far as the eye can see. Once we get to our perfect spot, I plop down on the soft sand and let the steady warmth of the sun seep into my back.
Every time I'm at the beach, with the steady sound of the crashing waves, and the laughter of little kids around me, I feel relaxed and at home. Running into the churning water makes me feel like with each step I am a galloping horse taking off. I feel the cool waves hitting my shins, coming as a shock from the warmth of the sand. The salty smell instantly hits my nose at the same time that I get a mouthful of salty water in my mouth; I can't help thinking of fish poop.
Wether I am playing in the waves with friends, surfing (though not very good,) or building sand castles, the beach makes me feel strong and confident. Although I can be by myself in the surf and have fun, it's always good to be with family and friends. Your querenciais supposed to make you feel powerful and that's how I feel at the beach.
